Competence; capability

Page history last edited by Bev Wood 13 years, 2 months ago

In her discussion of competence vs capability, Sarah Fraser makes the important point that capability trumps competence in being functional in medicine. Can you expand on her thoughts and consider ways in which this concept is applicable to the practice of medicine and the importance of capability. How will you judge capability in your learners? If you were in the previous class, you have already read this article, and you need not read it again.

1. Readings on Learning in Practice

Because it will be best to focus on the important content in the 3 Rushmer articles, I am suggesting that 4 (chosen alphabetically) take responsibility for discussion of each one. The names are listed below with the papers. Each paper in its own right, introduces a different aspect of the Learning Organization as a practice. I still suggest you read all 3 (as they work well together), but you need only be prepared to discuss one.

LIP_-_1.pdf    Discussants Arce, Bughi, Cloud, Disbrow

LIP-2.pdf       Discussants Edhayan, Giberson, Haghparast, Konia

LIP-3.pdf       Discussants Meyers, Olson, Rahman, Shaw

Be prepared to discuss those of the following concepts in class; as some of them may relate to the article you are responsible for. The questions do not relate to all 3 articles, but sometimes only to one.

1. How can you build a culture of a learning practice? What is the process of moving toward a learning culture?

2. What are  the advantages to having a learning practice? Explain them.

2. What are the essential characteristics of a learning practice?

What are the types of learning that occur in a learning organization, but not outside of one?

3. Discuss why change and adaptation to incorporate learning in a practice are difficult, and how can change to support learning  be facilitated?

4. What are the gains, advantages of being part of a learning practice--to the practice, to patient care, to those leaving, joining a practice?

5. Discuss leadership and empowerment as a feature of  a learning organization. Who is the leader, and what are the responsibilities they assume? What is the role of the leader?

6. What are the 3 contextual conditions discussed as part of a practice becoming a learning practice? Why and how do they each contribute?

2. Reading on Evaluation Challenges in the Era of Outcomes-based Education

Chapter 1, Pg 1-9    Entire class is responsible for reading and discussing this chapter.

Evaluation Challenges in the Era of Outcomes-Based Education

in Practical Guide to the Evaluation of Clinical Competence

Be prepared to discuss in class:

1. Methods of assessment of competence and performance, and criteria for choosing a method of assessment

2. Training of faculty in the general competencies (pg 7)
